River Phoenix was honored with Best Actor awards from the Venice Film Festival and the National Society of Film Critics for My Own Private Idaho. He received an Academy Award nomination and won National Board of Review and New York Film Critics Best Supporting Actor awards for Running on Empty.

His other films include Sneakers, Dogfight, I Love You to Death, Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, Little Nikita, A Night in the Life of Jimmy Reardon, The Mosquito Coast, Stand By Me, Explorers, and the yet to be released Silent Tongue. His upcoming projects include Dark Blood, co-starring Judy Davis and directed by George Sluizer, and Interview With A Vampire, directed by Neil Jordan.

Phoenix was born in Madras, Oregon. His family of seven travelled extensively before moving to California. His professional career started on television when he was ten years old with 22 episodes of Seven Brides For Seven Brothers.

An accomplished guitarist, Phoenix's band Aleka's Attic was formed in 1987. The band featured on the album Tame Yourself with k.d. lang, the B-52's, Indigo Girls, and Michael Stipe of R.E.M.
