On television, she has had regular roles as Gloria Davis in the critically-acclaimed Homefront, as Sylvia in the Emmy award-winning children's show Electric Company and in the Michael Learned drama Nurse. Most recently, she had a recurring role in the daytime drama Port Charles and guest-starred on The Smart Guy, Malcolm & Eddie, The Parent Hood, Between Brothers, Nick Freno: Licensed Teacher, High Incident and Arsenio. She has also been seen in such telefilms and mini-series as The Cherokee Kid, Saving Grace, Common Ground, Hollow Image and The Dain Curse.
Her feature film credits include Quentin Tarantino's Jackie Brown, Beverly Hills Cop III, Clara's Heart with Whoopi Goldberg, Meet the Deedles, True Crime with Clint Eastwood and the independent feature film Unbowed.
On Broadway, Winston has starred in The Tap Dance Kid, Two Gentlemen of Verona and The Me Nobody Knows. She received two Los Angeles Critics Drama-Logue Awards for her performances in To Take Arms and Up the Mountain and Obie Awards, CEBA Awards, and an Audelco Award for her contributions to the theatre world in general. Winston also produced the Off-Broadway production Black Nativity.
Among her other accomplishments, Winston served as national co-chairperson of AFTRA's Equal Employment Opportunities Committee; was recognized by the National Black Theatre Festival in Winston-Salem, N.C., with a Hattie Winston Day in 1993 and 1997; and was honored by the University of Louisville (Kentucky) with a dedication of the Library's Hattie Winston Collection, which contains more than 250 scripts, books and theatre memorabilia donated principally by Winston.
She lives in Los Angeles.
