Fina Torres
Born in Caracas, Venezuela, Torres studied design, photography and journalism in her native country, then moved to Paris where she earned a bachelors degree in cinematography from the Institute de Hautes Etudes Cinematographiques. She began her career in photo-journalism in Venezuela at the age of 17 and pursued a filmmaking career after she finished school at the age of 25.
Torres worked as a film editor, a camera operator, script supervisor and made several short films and documentaries before creating her first feature, ìOriannaî in 1985. She waited eight years before she would make her next internationally released feature, the French-Venezuelan-Spanish-Belgian co-production, ìCelestial Clockwork.î A romantic-comedy adaptation of the Cinderella story, Ariadna Gil (ìBelle Öpoqueî) starred as an opera singer who leaves her groom at the alter to move to Paris to pursue a career as an opera singer. Torres who writes many of her own scripts also produced this colorful fantasy that had its U.S. release in 1996 and won several festival prizes, including the National Prize for best Venezuelan film.
