Susie Garrett

Susie Garrett (1929-2002) was a US African-American actress, best known for playing Mrs. Betty Johnson on the TV series Punky Brewster from 1984 to 1988.

Born in Detroit, Michigan, For several years, she sang jazz at clubs in the city. She also starred in such plays as Dark of the Moon and Shakin' the Mess Out of Misery, and had a small part in the 1989 film Wicked Stepmother, which starred screen legend Bette Davis. In addition to acting, she had an associate degree in psychology from Shaw College.

She was the older sister of Marla Gibbs, also a TV actress in her own right. Together, they co-founded the Crossroads Art Academy acting school in Los Angeles.

Aside from Punky Brewster, she has guest starred on The Twilight Zone, My Three Sons, and her sister's TV series The Jeffersons and 227.

She died of cancer at Providence Hospital in Southfield, Michigan on May 24, 2002. She was laid to rest on June 4 of that year.
