Raised in Honolulu, Hawaii, Callies is the daughter of two university professors. She placed a strong emphasis on education and balanced her schoolwork with her passion for the stage. In high school, she landed her first lead in a production of Shakespeare's As You Like It. After graduating from the Ivy League's Dartmouth College with an undergraduate emphasis in Feminist Studies and a Senior Fellowship in Indigenous Theology, she attended Denver's National Theatre Conservatory to pursue her love of acting and to complete her Masters of Fine Arts degree.

Once finished with school, Callies moved to New York City and secured her first acting job on camera, a role opposite Oliver Platt in Queens Supreme.
