Gets grew up in Gainesville, Florida, and describes his career as a healthy balance of music and theater. An intensely serious student, he began studying piano at the age of nine and knew by that time that he wanted to pursue a career in the theater. While in his teens he worked as an accompanist at the Hippodrome, a local theater where he also attended workshops. Skipping two years of school, Gets graduated from high school at the age of 16 and worked his way through college playing piano in rehearsal halls.
After receiving a master's degree from the prestigious Yale Drama School, Gets was immediately cast in an off-Broadway production of the Marc Blizstein musical Juno. From there, he landed the lead in Martin Guerre at the Hartford Stage Company.
Recently, Gets starred in William Finn's musical A New Brain at New York's Lincoln Center and received critical accolades for his portrayal of Finn's alter ego Gordon Michael Schwinn, an aspiring theater composer who is diagnosed with a critical brain tumor. Gets' additional musical and theatrical credits include the York Theater Company's revival of Merrily We Roll Along, the Public Theater's production of Two Gentlemen of Verona and the Roundabout Theater's production of The Moliere Comedies. For Merrily We Roll Along he received a 1995 Drama Desk nomination for Best Actor in a Musical, and an Obie Award and the prestigious St. Clair Bayfield Award for Outstanding Classical Performance for his work in Two Gentlemen of Verona.
On the big screen, Gets portrayed F. Scott Fitzgerald in the critically acclaimed feature film Mrs. Parker and the Vicious Circle. Television audiences may recognize him from his starring role in Monkey Island, a one-man performance piece that was incorporated into the immensely popular Jackadory series for the BBC.
