Iain Softley

Iain Softley discovered an interest in filmmaking after directing and designing theater productions at the University of Cambridge, and soon began making documentaries while working for Granada TV. He then joined the BBC and created 30 auteur documentaries before beginning a successful career directing music videos.

In 1992, Softley's directed his first feature film, Backbeat, starring Stephen Dorff as ex-Beatle Stuart Sutcliffe. The film explored the early days of the Beatles, primarily in Hamburg, Germany, and received strong critical notices. Softley then directed Hackers (and served as executive producer), which deals with the mysterious and dangerous side of the computer world. The film has become a cult classic.

The Wings of the Dove was Softley's breakthrough motion picture. Based on a Henry James story, the film earned numerous international honors and four Academy Award® nominations including a best actress nomination for actress Helena Bonham Carter.
