| by rogueye Like to see you do a vignette (10 minutes or so) about a white guy who is degraded and treated roughly by a couple of cops (one of them might be black) for committing a crime of which he is innocent. The next two segments show the exact same sequence of events, except that the victim in #2 is hispanic, and in #3 the victim is black. Just thought you might appreciate the contrasts in perspective. | by Dale Johnson I just got done watching "Do The Right Thing". Saw it when it first came out soo long ago and knew then it was a important movie. Now I realize what a beautiful movie it is. The cinematography is reselient with hope. As troubled and ugly and bitter and tragic as the story ultimately is, Mr. Lee's vision is hopeful. He does not hate or dislike any of his characters. We are what we are. We must simply be honest with ourselves and commit to doing better. As to Mr. Lee's documentary on Katrina... I think it is brutally honest... as it should be. We need to do better. Comment on this... | ||||

| by pamela mcdonough when the levees broke is a wonderful piece...and would be even more wonderful condensed...(i've been an editor for 30 years, so i know what i'm talking about)...at 90 minutes it would be no only be more powerful, but more people would watch it (which would be a good thing)... my motto has always been "leave them wanting more"..not feeling you're rehashing... that said....thanks for this documentary..it should go in the time capsule! | by charles Macgowan New Orleans needed Spike Lee's so-called documentary like they needed more humidity in New Orleans. The level of hate and mistrust just doubled. Legions of otherwise unbiased folk just gave up the the last shred of good will they clutched to in their stuburn belief that race relations might improve in the city that forgot to care. That distant tap tap sound folks are hearing in neighborhoods in New Orleans is not a hammer doing some fix-up job on a recovering home, it's a for-sale sign being planted. White flight just increased as the allready cripled tax base just lost another 20 million or so. Not to worry, the feds will send cash, right? But, let's look on the bright side of the effects of this "hated heritage festival"- a New Orleans muni bond aught to pay about 25% now, so legions of rich white guys can make a killin if they're willing to take a chance on this long shot. The late New Orleans horse track gambler Black Cat Lacomb wouldn't take that bet, but there might be some that will. Racism and racial hatred were given new life and renewed purpose by this atrocity, and ironically enough, the real victoms of it's effects will be the very people it would claim to champion. That chuckling sound you hear is from skin heads, neo-facists and Klan who will be burning copies of the dvd when it's released for recruitment efforts. At some point in the heat of early October last year, someone digging through the ruins on their beloved New Orleans probably said- "well, this has got to be the worst it will ever get..." Obviously, they underestimated the skills of Spike Lee to turn a lemon into a rat poison smoothy. Charles Comment on this... | ||||

| by Veronica Gbesi How do I love thee Spike Lee...let me count the ways. I discovered the then little known director as I sat and watched a strange movie, described as a sexy comedy, called "She's Gotta Have It". Was that about 20 years ago? And as I walked perplexed from the theater not knowing if what I viewed was okay, normal.. I fell in love. I like so many others have come to love the work of Spike Lee, have felt honored to be on this journey. His movies are always IN YOUR FACE and even if you are not a critically aware viewer you can not escape the soap box preaching of dear Mr. Lee. His films continues to make you think, laugh, cry, and squirm at the human condition. Spike's movies glady airs the dirty laundry of the country....and once again in glaring fashion, he brings it with "When the Levees Broke"...thank you Mr. Lee for once again putting it in our faces...we felt the pain and despair of the people of New Orleans through your docu. more then we could have ever by viewing the news. As I watched I wanted to hug someone, help someone, I felt as if I was watching the parade of my people to the slave ships going somewhere unknown, stripped of their dignity, family and hope...I felt the anquish of the jews hoarded off to a certain depth...Levees.... is a testimony to how far we have NOT come and how strong a spirit can be. I love you for your work, your honesty, your humor and your courage Spike....How do I love thee, Let me count the ways....you are our Shakespeare...generations to come will say to the talented brave few....you are our Spike Lee....stay strong and free my brother. | by Nancy C. Kormushoff Thank you Mr. Lee. I only wish most people were "required" to see your exceptional documentary. I know thats not possible, but just thinking that a younger generation were able too, maybe, just maybe, this ugly, redneck, and lots of (uneducated,) plus this greedy world could turn around a bit.
