It is difficult to put into words precisely how much I've enjoyed Sam Waterston's work. It is a pleasure to watch a professional actor doing his job. As a relative newcomer to the "fold", having begun acting at age 46 about five years ago, I have learned much by watching this man work. As was once said about Spencer Tracy, his "watchability" comes from the fact that you don't see the mechanism at work - and this is true as well for Sam Waterston. And so, with a hope, a prayer, and gratitude to Sam, I'll be taking the big leap and leaving Chicago for L.A. soon. Thanks to Sam, for watching him makes me want to be a better actor.

I couldn't agree more with the comments about Sam Waterston that were expressed above. You have really summed up the essence of what I find so wonderful about him. He is a real actor and a real man. He restores my hope that maybe there ARE people "out there" who are intelligent, genteel, graceful, thoughtful, kind, and also damn sexy. If I could have one wish on this earth it would be to have the opportunity to meet Sam in person, shake his hand (I'd be trembling), look into those beautiful eyes and tell him face to face how much I appreciate him. It might not mean much to him to hear that from a complete stranger!..but it would mean so much to me to have the chance to say it to him. I could die happy after that (LOL). I'm not getting my hopes up......I know it could probably never happen...but a girl can dream!

Simply Wonderful. (Fri Aug 22, 2003 6:53pm ET)report post

Sam Waterston is completely unique. He has been called "The Thinking Man's Actor". But he is more than that.
He is brilliant, and, in his own way, strangely beautiful.
There's no one like him. He gives such richness to his roles, that he's always terrific and very well liked.
I truly believe he is seriously under-rated, perhaps because of his generally soft voice and subtle expressions. He should've garnered far more awards than he has, and I'd love to see more for him in the future.
He has a smile that would melt bedrock, and a way of speaking that is simply wonderful.
