Wanting To Be A Private Man (Sun Oct 26, 2008 9:21pm ET)report post
by RonPrice
For most people, interaction with others provides most of what they require to find meaning and significance in life.1 For others, meaning and significance are obtained from other sources. Creative activity is a particularly apt way to express oneself; this activity is often solitary, although the productions which result are generally regarded as possessing value to society. For this writer, solitariness had been essential and so had human interaction. After more than fifty years of extensive interaction(1949-1999), he felt he was moving into a period in his life characterized by a dominance of the solitary; after more than forty years of pioneering(1962-2002) from place to place, the time to stay in one place to life’s end may have arrived. He was not sure; this was not a certitude given life’s slings and arrows. Like Robert Redford, he wanted “to be a private man doing his own thing in a remote”2 place. Robert Redford had trouble attaining this dominance of the solitary but, by 2009, I could say that the first decade of my retirement(1999 to 2009), had placed me well on the way. -Ron Price with thanks to: 1Sylvia Nasar, A Beautiful Mind: A Biography of John Nash, Simon and Schuster, NY, 1998, p.15; and 2Minty Clinch, Robert Redford, New English Library, London, 1989, p.3.

There were always skads of people around
back then in ’62. They were unavoidable,
essential to your1 way of life. You accepted
them like the air; they’d always been there.

And it stayed that way, in one way or another,
until just the other day when it became just
you and your wife,2 a couple of shopkeepers,
your son and step-daughter dropping in, the
good-byes to the Baha’is, dinner with friends.

Getting closer to solitude, but never really
there, probably never really attainable, not
totally, for this commitment, this vision, is
all part of what Holley called: ‘the social
religion’ and social it is, with solitariness
only really desireable to a degree, a little,
to a degree, to a degree, only to a degree.

1 In this poem I address ‘you’ and the ‘you’ is, in fact, myself.
2 My son moved out of home and my wife and I were alone for the first time in our marriage, in our relationship which began back in about April 1974.

Great Redford Website (Wed Jul 16, 2008 2:37pm ET)report post
by Brunette Hottie
There is a great website not mention on the website list. It's at:
clik.to/RobertRedfordOnline

Also, Marilyn, I've seen your brother in law, David and some promos of the film, unfortunately I was not able to see the film but read the good reviews. It's true it suffered from lack of advertising. Is it possible David is a distant relative. RR paternal family is from NEngland?

Movie 'Noelle' (Thu Dec 13, 2007 11:30am ET)report post
by Marilyn
Mr Redford, My friend (my Daughter-in-laws Brother) David Wall looks a lot like you. David has just written, directed & starred in the movie 'Noelle'. I'm wondering if you've seen it (released Dec 7, 07). David & his wife Kerry have struggled for many yrs to realize their dream. They are a wonderful, hard working couple & raising their 4 children. I've often why God had David resemble you so much & now I'm thinking maybe you could help him with this movie. It's a wonderful story & movie but, I'm understanding the movie is struggling now due to lack of enough advertisement. I guess I should also mention how much I've always enjoyed your movies.

Thank you,
Marilyn

Doctor of Psychology (Sat Jul 28, 2007 4:19pm ET)report post
by Cleo Allen Ph.D.
Dearest Bob,

I wanted to mention to you before you returned home this evenning from your day's work that some work I did on Mad TV as a psychologist turned up today on Comedy Central twice. Towards the end of the program I am featured in my under- garments trying very hurriedly to get dressed so that I could leave the facility. I do know that you did mention some damage-control problems you had encountered after the skit had been taped. I only wanted to warn you that the segment is currently on display for everyone's edification so that you can adjust to some possible extra-attention which may come my way. I love you baby. (smile!)

Sincerely, Elaine.

Redford for President (Mon May 28, 2007 3:48am ET)report post
by Mike
Hmm, as a non-American myself, I'm not sure if I'm qualified to say my bit here, only that as a member of your most loyal ally, v v few of us supported Blair's servile backing of Bush. That war was and will always be illegal, never mind being right or wrong. So for big names like Redford to be willing to pit his Americanness against the Americanness that all too often holds sway in your country's policies is a big bold move which wins my own respect for him the man far more than it did for him the actor or director, as I found him a bit too perfect, a bit too wholesome if you know what I mean. However, now he seems to have said his piece, I don't see why he shouldn't run for your presidency. From the outside, believe me, it does seem like your country is a little short on calm and sensible, more worldly people in the power making positions at the top. He's a sensible guy, he's a true American, he's known all over the world. Someone should have a word with him.

Just watched An Unfinished Life and I would have to say it is one of the best of his films to date. As his career continues his acting becomes more refined and subtle. Loved the character, loved the story.
And...as for his politics I am a very patriotic Democratic liberal who wants her country back. Thank you Mr. Redford for speaking for those who do not have the mic.

Proud Conservative (Sun Jan 21, 2007 12:23am ET)report post
by William Nice
In response to your latest rant against George W. Bush in which you claim he owes America an apology for the war in Iraq. You and the rest of your liberal ilk ought to be ashamed of yourselves. You sir, are an un-American, un- patriotic man. I believe you and every other hateful liberal in Hollywood owes a great man like George W. Bush and the rest of his administration a HUGE APOLOGY for all your hateful, reprehensable remarks that you have made against him/administration in the past six years. Your vision of America in the future is a "wild fantasy". Very unworthy of notice. Please Robert, it's time to join reality.

Mr. Redford's comments are so out of touch with reality it makes me ashamed. I'm interested to hear from anyone that has been jailed or picked up by the Government for expressing an opinion. Redford and others like him make me embarrassed to be a liberal. They merely weaken true intellectual debate. Redford is the Left's version of Rush Limbaugh. Shutup and make movies.

make believe (Sat Jan 20, 2007 10:30am ET)report post
by marcy
Robert Redford...
What gives you any credibility to make comments on the security of the USA.
What do you do for a living? You "make believe"....like a 4 year old. The fact that you have people worshiping you for this line of work does say something about our society...but don't get all puffed up about it..cause at the end of the day, you "make believe" for a living..That's your life! Keep at that, and leave the decisions on how to protect 200 million people to those who have that awsome responsibility on their shoulders every day and night. Comments on that subject from you just sound nieve and silly.
