Gina Torres
The youngest of three children in a Cuban family living in the Bronx, and a graduate of the Fiorello LaGuardia School of Arts, Torres is a gifted mezzo-soprano as well as a jazz and gospel singer. Following her high school graduation, she made her professional debut as the lead in a Connecticut production of Dreamgirls. Over the next several years, the ingénue amassed an impressive list of stage credits, including two leads on Broadway in The Best Little Whorehouse Goes Public and Face Value. Working with such acclaimed directors as Dan Sullivan, Tommy Tune, Peter Masterson and Jerry Zaks, she starred in Antigone, Blood Wedding, A Raisin in the Sun and Ma Rainey's Black Bottom. In 2004, Torres returned to her theatrical roots in the regional release of the urban comedy Hair Show.
Following a recurring role on the daytime drama One Life To Live, Torres has worked steadily in television, portraying numerous action heroines in Hercules: The Legendary Journeys, Xena: Warrior Princess, Firefly, Angel, and her ALMA Award-winning role of Hel in the futuristic adventure series Cleopatra 2525. Torres' additional television credits include 24, Any Day Now, The Agency, The Guardian and Without A Trace. She also provides the voice of Vixen on the animated series Justice League.
Featured in People Espanol's 50 Most Beautiful (2004) and 25 Most Beautiful" (2003), Torres stars in the upcoming independent films Jam and South of Pico, and in the political thriller Five Fingers, playing opposite her husband Laurence Fishburne. She can also be seen in the romantic comedy Fair Game, now available on DVD.
Torres maintains homes in New York and Los Angeles, which she shares with Fishburne and their two dogs.
