Sorrow of War (Fri Jun 11, 2004 5:55pm ET)report post
by Scott Lokey
Does anyone know if Ang Lee has considered making a movie from the beautiful classic novel The Sorrow of War by Bao Ninh? It is a tragic story of the lives of two North Vietnamese (one soldier and his girlfriend) touched by the Vietnam war. It's about time a major motion picture was made about the Vietnam war from the N. Vietnamese point of view, and Ang Lee would be the perfect director.

Ang Lee and Chinese opera (Mon Apr 26, 2004 5:38pm ET)report post
by Lin Bo-zhi

I've heard that Ang Lee has thought about doing film versions of several Chinese operas in the past -- I think it would be nice for him to do a short film of a Kunqu version of the "Opera of Twelve Nanking Beauties" (Jinling Shi'er Chai) from Dream of the Red Chamber (Honglou Meng). His Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon proved that he has a unique talent for brining traditional Chinese genres to life on screen, and if he applied himself in the same way to the refined Kunqu he could renew interest in the genre both in Asia and the West.

hoping (Sun Jan 11, 2004 2:40pm ET)report post
by cat
I was hoping to drop Mr. Lee an e-mail note. My brother and he went to NYU together. I just watched Sense and Sensibility and loved it so. That is when my brother told me about being in school together with him. My brother was also nominated for an academy award, an honor in itself, but alas did not take home the coveted award. Ironically, my brother is still struggling even after being nominated. I would like to ask for advice from Mr. Lee how my brother can still MAKE it! I am interested to know how talented people can make it happen!

PS - my brother would kill me if he knew I was doing such a thing.

Thanks, Ck

The Hulk was uninspired and poorly directed (Wed Jun 25, 2003 9:48pm ET)report post
by Adam
I just saw the hulk and I am also a fan of Mr. Lee's but I have to admit that the critics are right about this one... it deserves a C- .
The story was ALL wrong and the Hulk wasn't produced well.
More should have been shown concerning Banner's childhood and less on all these fancy screen shots. More should have been shown on Banner getting into fights with other children as a youth and him holding in this rage. Also, his father should have been more abusive in his childhood and less obsessed with his work. The father should have been more obsessed with outside activites like gambling or womanizing and abusive towards the mom more.
The Hulk should have NOT had Brown hair. His hair is Black. Also the Hulk's face was too gentle and completely unlike the true character, the comic-book character's features. He should have had more dark around the eyes and his mouth should have been bigger and his teeth bigger as well. Also, The Hulk's yell should have been waaaaay more louder and monstrous.
The transformation of Banner into the Hulk should have didn't come about in a logical or reasonable manner. IT WAS DUMB!!! He wakes up and turns into the Hulk! How DUMB! His first transformation should have been through a nightmare that spilled over into reality and then.... the HULK!
The character DAvid Banner wasn't given ANY good lines in the first half of the movie at all. He should have. Also, Betty Ross' character should have had brown curly hair.. NOT asian-looking black-dyed hair.
The concept of nanomeds was dumb as well. If you were trying to use some device to trigger a transformation it should have been something more realistic like synth-phages (synthetic macrophages) that got irradiated with gamma-radiation or at least give the name of nannites.. but nanomeds... this is poorly thought out.?!

Now the poster. First of all we ALL know how the incredible HULK looks... Why not SHOW him in the poster. INstead we have this big hand blocking things. THIS IS A POOR MARKETING TOOL!!! This does nothing to attract attention to the movie. SHOW THE HULK in the poster!!!!

I like Ang Lee as a director, but he obviously was NOT the director to have for this movie. Next time choose someone who considers these things I have mentioned.

You SU.CK as a critic. this is not a comic book. This is a action/drama film. He reinvented the hulk for the movie. Just like comic books do with all their old characters every ten years. DO NOT CRITICIZE SOMETHING YOU DO NOT UNDERSTAND. If you have studied what he has done in the past and what he has done with the idea of HULK, you would know that it was a very great fit and a valient effort by Master Lee.

Rubbish.

The film was excellent on many levels - you might have missed some of them.

I didn't realize some of my favorite movies were made by Ang Lee. Sense and Sensibility- The Ice Storm- Crouching Tiger- can't wait for the Hulk. What a wonderfully creative individual!
Thank you Ang Lee
