On television, she recently starred in Two Small Voices, for Lifetime Television, and in the CBS movie Replacing Dad. Other television roles include TNT's acclaimed production of Arthur Miller's The American Clock and the CBS series High Society. McDonnell has also played a wide variety of leading roles both on and off- Broadway, as well as in many of the country's most renowned regional theatres.
Her New York debut was in Sam Shepard's Pulitzer Prize-winner Buried Child. She has worked steadily ever since playing the classics as well as the works of leading contemporary playwrights. She starred in the title role in the Broadway production of Wendy Wasserstein's Pulitzer Prize-winning play The Heidi Chronicles, and more recently, starred in Tennessee Williams' Summer and Smoke. In 1981, McDonnell received an Obie Award for her performance in Emily Mann's Still Life. Her leading role in Darrah Cloud's adaptation of Willa Cather's Oh, Pioneers was filmed for American Playhouse on PBS.
