movie deal (Sun Jul 3, 2005 8:24am ET)report post
by mario rivera
I want to make a movie and I would like your help. I want to make a movie about the Spanish conquest of Mexico. I have a script and I have been trying to sell it to anyone. I think I have been going the wrong way about this. I can not be satisfied if my vision of the movie is not transmitted into the film. I don't want hollywood stereotypical images of what they think Aztecs and Spaniards should be like to be inplanted on this movie. I'm a history major graduated from the San Bernardino State university in southern California. I know this period. I know the feel, the thinking, the rationale, the physical aspects of both societies, the economics, religion, language and their blunt ultimate goals.
I have been watching movies my whole life. I'm 34 and I know a good thing when I see one. I know that "The last Samurai" was an excellent movie because of its careful portrayal of Japanese culture which enhansed everybody's performances. On the other hand "War of the Worlds" was a rushed project with poor editing and bad character development. Please, make this dream of mine come true. I'm not looking for money or recognition. I just want this tale to be told. Much of who we are as hispanics springs from this period and nobody has dared to touch it in an intelligent way. I'm the man that can do it, if only I am given a chance. Thank you for your time.

Forget Robert helping anyone (Tue Jan 17, 2006 6:08am ET)report post
by rico
I have read many of the comments posted on this chat e-mail, so here is my opinion of Robert based on my early visits with him...... For all you aspiring unknown struggling Hispanic/ Latino Filmmakers and actor's/actresses, you can forget about Rodriguez ever helping you out. Your wasting your time.... He just dosen't do that sort of thing. He is a lying prick, this is a fact known by other Latino talent in Austin. I should know, I approached him once in Los Angeles on a late December night of 92 while he was staying at a Howard Johnson working on the "El Marachi final draft of his poster, and other related stuff. In fact he almost stood me up, had it not been for my persistency having to wait for him 3 hours in the lobby. My few and far apart visits with him were sometimes promising and optimistic that would eventually turn to disillusions. I am not the only one that feels that way.... I am sure he has alot of little puppets that just think he is the God of filmmaking. There are several out there that have been left with a sour taste in there mouth, by the great proclaimer. I even know someone from Ft Worth who told me Robert fed him with his "I'll help you somday get started, psycho babble horse crap", But thats Robert for you! Bottom line Robert did arrive back at the Howard Johnson. I did as he told me to wait for him, at a certain time. I remember one time at his apartment months before the December of 92 chat (some time May of 91), his future intention was to help Latinos who were looking to be recognized and he would offer them opportunities in the industry. He felt Hispanics were not portayed and given a fair shake in character roles and felt Hispanics being stereotyped as negative or sort of say, "the bad guys" by the film industry. Even after those few times of getting together with him, yes, I did present a project to him going through the proper channels, but after he blew off my representation and I, a couple of years later with a nice script I had written, I knew this guy was full of hot air. And I don't blame him... When your on top why would you want to help anyone when nobody helped him except for Carlos. The nice thing I remember about him was that he was genuine when he was on the brink of making it. I could see that sparkle of ambition in his eye.. Later that day in May of 91 at his apartment he went on to show me a rough cut of his trailor for "Marachi"and spoke of his aspirations. He told me I would play a bad guy in his up-coming movies and soon after that I did not here from him again until running into him in December of 92. He did apologized and bought my dinner at 3:00 am that morning. I am just a mere one testimony, but I assure you there are others in Austin..... Alex Avila, for example, at UT, Latino USA Radio can share his own opinion. And there are others.... Alex is a great talent with great ideas, but when he approched Robert for a interview and some financial underwriting, he blew him off. My point is he has millions, but if someone has a story they want to tell, that has promise, what's $15,000 to shell out from your millions that you have made. It's just "chump" change! By helping another Latino you can't lose.... Someone like Robert gets the exposure, a project you produced and a chance to help someone make there dream come true by getting there script fullfilled into either a film or documentry...How can you possibly lose! Plus Latino's opening the doors for others just increases the chance's of Latinos making headway. Oprah helps many in all walks of life and so does Spike... Like I said he is not going to give anyone a shot. He is not into reality TV show gimmicks! I believe that if you say something to someone stick to your word. I am a ex-military guy with a background where I was trained to know, I can sit down with you for a few minutes and know where your coming from! I could see right through Robert. In his position you can't afford to tick off to many people, not like he already hasn't in Hollywood... But don't forget he is in a position with his millions to say what ever he wants.. As long as the Weinsteins are with him, he will continue to do his off the wall senseless diologue films.... Someone in Hollywood once said, "anyone can make movies but it's all about writing crisp sensational diologue and Robert Rodriguez you need to go back to school and take a few years more years of screenwriting. Either your a bad screenwriter or your script editors come cheap by the dozen to proof read your stuff so that you can continue to do your low budget flicks as you many times have claimed.. So there you have it don't bother Robert Rodriguez for a few pennies for your project or needs ...You might end up getting disappointed...

Why not take a course in screen writing to start? Next, plan your script to start with a hook that compels the audience to become engossed in your story. Example: Start up high, looking down at the pyramids. people are small like ants, and then you slowly zoom in. Pyramid major is becoming larger...Peole are distinct in dress etc. Closer until you sweep in close to a priest (filthy with dried blood in hair and on clothes, on top of a sacrificial platform...Sun illuminates him, one hand up holding a sacrificial knife...in tight to a hand holding a human heart that pumps slow spurts of blood decending on his person...last quiver of the heart, in tight...OK?
