Allen has more recently been honored by critics for her work in Pleasantville and The Ice Storm, and also starred with John Travolta and Nicolas Cage in the hit thriller Face/Off. Her additional film credits include It's the Rage, Mad Love, Ethan Frome, Josh and 5A.M., Searching for Bobby Fischer, In Country, Tucker: The Man and His Dream, Manhunter, Peggy Sue Got Married and Compromising Positions.
Also an accomplished stage actress, Allen won a Best Actress Tony Award for her work on Broadway in Lanford Wilson's Burn This, and was Tony-nominated for her performance in The Heidi Chronicles. Off-Broadway, she received an Obie Award for The Marriage of Bette & Boo. In addition, she won the Clarence Derwent, Drama Desk, Outer Critics Circle and Theatre World Awards for And a Nightingale Sang in the role she originated with Chicago's renowned Steppenwolf Theatre Company, and for which she had won a Joseph Jefferson Award. An original member of Steppenwolf, Allen also received a Joseph Jefferson Award for her work in A Lesson From Aloes.
