She was an attractive actress who had a voice that had a wonderful, droll, sarcastic edge to it. She was rarely the star of the films that she appeared it, but leant a strong supporting role in many films like Mildred Pierce and Stage Door.

She was also famous for appearing as Miss Brooks in the 1950s sitcom Our Miss Brooks.
