| by Bill Brandt You left out one of her strongest roles as Fanny, the maiden aunt in "The Magnificent Ambersons". It is amazing to watch her bitter resentment and peevishness disolve into a despair finally bordering on mania. She is superb foil to the all the other soft-focus characters in the film. I don't think one could sit through the film, were it not for her petty nastiness and final dimentia. Also, she gives an equally astounding solo performance in an episode of the "Twilight Zone" as a dreary old back-country crone. I believe that she does not speak a single word in the 1/2 hour performance. Certainly proof that she wasn't afraid to take on very unattractive characterizations if there was a chance to display a wonderful craft. Comment on this... |
