In 1995, Crudup landed a prominent supporting role in the widely acclaimed Broadway production of Tom Stoppard's Arcadia, winning lavish critical praise and several prestigious awards for his performances. In 1996, Crudup joined Brad Pitt and Jason Patric in the cast of Sleepers, and then appeared briefly in Woody Allen's Everyone Says I Love You. He subsequently returned to Broadway for a revival of William Inge's Bus Stop.

Crudup landed his first breakout film role in the 1996 indie favorite Inventing the Abbotts. In 1997, he returned to the stage with a supporting role in the Broadway production of Chekhov's Three Sisters, opposite Lili Taylor, Amy Irving, and Jeanne Tripplehorn. In 1998, Crudup undertook his first starring role in Without Limits, the Tom Cruise produced biopic of distance runner Steven Prefontaine. He followed with roles in Stephen Frears' The Hi-Lo Country and Keith Gordon's Waking the Dead.

In 1999-2000, Crudup starred in two widely acclaimed films: Alison Maclean's Jesus' Son and Cameron Crowe's Almost Famous. Crudup recently played the lead in the Central Park staged run of Shakespeare's Measure for Measure, and will next be seen in World Traveler with Julianne Moore.
