John Roberts

John Roberts previously directed War of the Buttons, for producer David Puttnam. He began his directing career while working as a graphic designer in the early 1980s. In 1985, he directed the short film So What, which was received with critical acclaim at the London Film Festival.

Roberts then entered the National Film and Television School in Britain, founded by filmmaker David Puttnam. By the end of his three years there, he had directed two awardwinning short films: Say Goodbye, which earned a BAFTA Award; and This Boy's Story, which was honored by his peers with a Student Academy Award.

Recognizing Roberts' promise, Puttnam gave him his first feature film directorial assignment, War of the Buttons, which was shot entirely on location in Ireland. Paulie marks the director's first major studio wide release.
