| by Andris Heks BUZZ LUHRMANN’S ‘AUSTRALIA’ COMPLETES WHAT WHITLAM, KEATING AND RUDD BEGAN. The film’s outstanding achievement is to acknowledge Aboriginality as fundamental to the very notion of Australia. Luhrmann achieves this by making Gulpilil’s archetypal character shadow the entire film and empower him with averting catastrophy and as such, symbolically save this country. This is why this film is a triumph- at last celebrating Aboriginal spirituality as the soul of Australia! Any criticism one may have of this film dwarfs beside the significance of this fact. What Whitlam, Keating and Rudd began in acknowledging our indebtedness to Aboriginees in defining this nation, Luhrmann continues, and in a way completes symbolically. Not only Nicole Kidman but whole Australia fall in love with shaman King George and his black and white grandson Nullah. I do hope that most Australians won’t miss this magnificent forest for the tree of criticisms of the film as grandiose, over the top, Hollywoodlike etc. I suggest people view this film on a huge screen, like that of the Edge Cinema in Katoomba. Only an enormous screen can do justice to the enormity of Aboriginal dignity coming through the film, its breathtaking scenes and scenery, its stupendous cinematography and gripping drama. To those who get caught up in criticisms, like that the film is overdone I can only say: don’t miss that forest! This is a huge epic that needed to be larger than life. It needed to pull out every trick from the sleeve, to outdo Holliwood, the Titanic, Jurassic Park, Doctor Zhivago, John Wayne westerns, San Francisco and Gone with the wind. The film is bigger than Ben Hur. And all this with a largely Australian team! I hope the film will be an enormous box office success and get all the top awards it deserves, including Best Director, Screenplay, Best Actor for the Aboriginal boy, Brandon Walters and Best Supporting Actor to any of Gulpilil, David Wenham, and Jack Thompson. And if anyone has doubts about Nicole Kidman’s acting ability just take a look at the scene when she tries to sing ‘Somewhere over the rainbow’ to Brandon Walters. What the film Edge does in a modest way to make people appreciate the magic of the Blue Mountains, the film Australia does in a huge way in revealing the Aboriginal spirituality of our land. I therefore suggest to the management of Edge cinema and other large screen cinemas throughout Australia that they purchase this film and they keep showing it to the public, Australians and tourists, on an ongoing basis.
