Biography #2 (for The Emperor's Club)

Michael Hoffman simply had to pull from his past to visualize the world of Classics Professor William Hundert on the big screen. A Rhodes scholar at Oxford who studied Renaissance Literature, the Boise, Idaho native was equally enthralled with the Ancients. The Emperor Club marks his third collaboration with Academy Award winner Kevin Kline. The two previously reamed on A Midsummer Night's Dream, which he also wrote, and the comedy Soapdish.

In keeping with the mindset of a traditional traveling theater company, Hoffman has frequently re-teamed with some of Hollywood's top talent in his films. Michelle Pfeiffer co-starred with Kline in A Midsummer Night's Dream and One Fine Day, co- starring George Clooney. Robert Downey Jr. appeared opposite Kline in Soapdish and Restoration. He directed Privileged, which he co-wrote with Restoration screenwriter Rupert Walters and featured the debut performances of Hugh Grant, James Wilby and Imogen Stubbs. Grant also starred in Restoration.

Hoffman has also directed the films Some Girls, Restless Natives and Promised Land, which he wrote.

Before attending Oxford, he graduated from Boise State University where he was Student Body President. He is one of the founders of the Idaho Shakespeare Festival.
