Bob Rafelson Forum

| by Brian J. Small I was General Manager of the Greater Victoria Chamber of Commerce in August of 1970 when I received a call from Richard Wexler to enquire about an Island Location for a movie. The Movie was Five Easy Pieces. I told him to come on up and we will find what you want and sure enough, five days later we found the "house" that he said was perfect. Richard and Toby Rafelson showed me the the "ropes" on how to help movie companies accomplish their needs for filming a project and I was hooked. The Chamber sponsored the establishment of an inhouse film commision which became the Victoria, Vancouver Island Film Commision. I became the film commissioner for the next 24 years, retiring in 1994 because of a hearing loss problem. This movie was the reason we asked our Provincial Goverment to establish a BC Film Commision and it was done. BC has never looked back and the film industry is a key player in the BC economy. I had a wonderful career as Manager of the Chamber and Film Commission and needless to say I love telling all of the stories that came with this experience. Special thanks to Toby who took me by the hand and showed me the business side of the movie world. Kindest regards, Brian J. Small Comment on this... |
