fellows: if you should have success in contacting mister schrader please help me to tell him the following text:
" Dear Mr. Schrader! Your Cat People is the movie that made me a religious being. Do you remember Kant's differentiation between the Beauty and the Sublimity? I think: since Kant the arts have the goal of sublimity instead of beauty - and this movie - from beauty Irena at the Airport until the Rilke-association at the end - it is a movie which can take the viewer - the voyeur as beautyseeker - and leave him as a sublimity-seeker! Nastassia was left in the world of beauty. Her fault.

Because of an experience a friend of mine had in Muncie, Indiana in 1971 which as similar to "Close Encounters of the Third Kind" I am searching for a way to contact Paul Schrader who wrote the original text for that movie.

Schrader has an office in Times Square, though I don't know the address. I might suggest, however, that if you're looking for someone with which to share a common experience such as a UFO siting, Schrader is likely to disappoint. While I obviously can't speak for the man, I know that the genesis of "Close Encounters" comes most likely not from a personal experience with an alien visitation, but rather from his attempt to find a commercial, contemporary metaphor for the Gospel of St. Paul. The quest of the Richard Dreyfuss character, the manner in which his faith and conviction was a lonely and mocked pursuit, was meant to correlate with Paul's religious conversion and the persecution and isolation which followed. If you follow Schrader's career, you won't be surprised to learn that the origin of "Close Encounters" is more in the nature of an intellectual/religious exercise, as opposed to any type of literal autobiographical expression. I could, of course, be wrong; he may have had an experience which he simply hasn't shared publically. But he's been quite clear and vocal about his thought processes at the time of his original (rejected) script's creation.

Paul Schrader is from Grand Rapids, MI and not Grand Rapids, MN.
