Anne Carrey

Anne Carey, in partnership with Ted Hope, runs the independent NYC-based production company This is that. Co-founded by the duo with producer Anthony Bregman in 2002, This is that specializes in unique content and innovative storytelling. Ms. Carey was named one of Variety's 10 Producers to Watch in 2004.

In its first year, the company produced, for release by Focus Features, 21 Grams, directed by Alejandro González Iñárritu from Guillermo Arriaga's original screenplay, and starring Sean Penn and Academy Award nominees Benicio Del Toro and Naomi Watts; Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, directed by Michel Gondry from Charlie Kaufman's Academy Award-winning original screenplay, and starring Golden Globe Award nominee Jim Carrey and Academy Award nominee Kate Winslet; and The Door in the Floor, adapted and directed by Tod Williams from John Irving's novel A Widow for One Year, starring Jeff Bridges and Kim Basinger. Subsequent films from This is that included Mike Mills' feature directorial debut, Thumbsucker, which he adapted from Walter Kirn's novel of the same name, starring Lou Taylor Pucci and Keanu Reeves; writer/director John Waters' A Dirty Shame, starring Tracey Ullman and Johnny Knoxville; writer/director Nicole Holofcener's Friends with Money, starring Jennifer Aniston, Joan Cusack, Catherine Keener, and Independent Spirit Award winner Frances McDormand; and writer/director Alan Ball's Towelhead (a.k.a. Nothing is Private), adapted from Alicia Erian's novel of the same name and starring Independent Spirit Award nominee Summer Bishil.

Ms. Carey has also produced through This is that The Savages, for which stars Laura Linney and Philip Seymour Hoffman received, respectively, Academy Award and Independent Spirit Award nominations; director Tamara Jenkins earned an Academy Award nomination and an Independent Spirit Award for her original screenplay. Most recently, Ms. Carey produced through This is that Spirit Award-nominated writer/director Greg Mottola's Adventureland, starring Jesse Eisenberg and Kristen Stewart. The company is currently in post-production on writer/director James Gunn's Super, starring Rainn Wilson, Ellen Page, and Liv Tyler.

Ms. Carey associate-produced Ang Lee's Ride with the Devil and John O'Hagan's documentary Wonderland. She was executive producer, with Mr. Hope, of Moisés Kaufman's multi-Emmy Award-nominated The Laramie Project. The feature screened at the 2002 Sundance and Berlin International Film Festivals, and was subsequently honored with the 2002 Humanitas Prize.

Prior to the formation of This is that, she had joined the groundbreaking independent film company Good Machine, which Mr. Hope co-founded in 1991 with James Schamus, in 1996 and supervised development of the company's wide-ranging slate of features for six years. Ms. Carey had previously worked at the William Morris Agency, as head of development, with top film and television talent.
