| by matty I have juste seen Shooting Dogs/ Beyond the Gates and whilst I was impressed with the film as a whole I was astonished by the sensitive and utterly convincing performance of the young actress. Having lived in Africa and been a teacher for 10 years in less developed countries the film made an impact on me in many ways, especially the dilemma faced by the character Joe. Too often films that deal with such disturbing subjects sensationalize events, however this film focussed on the emotional and personal conflict shared by the two male leads whcih made the film far more effective than similar films. Clare-Hope's performance, albeit often understated perfectly captures how a young person feels when a promise is broken or when someone they depend on and looks up too "lets them down". I have read that Clare-Hope plans to focus on her academic career which is good for her but a shame for the cinema going public as this young lady has considerable natural talent...and she has a beautiful smile.
