| by A. J. Hitchcock In addition to my previous objection to the statement that Cukor was well known for being homosexual, I must say I find it curious that the brief biographical sketch of such a great film artist contains a reference to the speculation that Clark Gable wanted him fired from Gone With The Wind. It is far more likely that Cukor was fired by David O. Selznick, the producer, because he found Cukor's work somewhat flat and slow-paced. Selznick was nervous about such a lavish undertaking and may have seriously underestimated what Cukor was doing, as any viewer can notice in Cukor's surviving scenes in the film. But at any rate, a comment on Cukor's sexuality in a brief biography is irrelevant and demeaning. One need only look at the long list of superb work he did in order to realize that his private life had no relevance whatever. Comment on this... |

| by A. J. Hitchcock The brief biography on this site stating that George Cukor was well known for being homosexual is incorrect. His friends and associates in Hollywood may have known of his sexual orientation, but he was extremely discreet. If he had been open about being gay he might not have been able to work in an industry so dependent upon image. Comment on this... |
