| by Mike Mathis I was so surprised to see Kumar in "Royal Tenenbaums"--he was my yoga teacher in the early 70's, I knew him and his then-wife Ranjana (whom I still saw occasionally until I left Dallas about 8 years ago), and his son Dipak (also in the film as the doctor) was about 6 years old when I first met them. At one point they kind of adopted me, as I was very young and had few resources--they helped feed and clothe me, for which I am still grateful. The thing that floored me is that in the movie, his character Pagoda is almost silent, and in real life, the man will talk your ear off! I had never seen him with a mustache, so I wasn't positive it was him until I saw one scene showing his bedroom (he's doing a headstand), and I saw the same yoga posters on the wall that he had in the Yoga Center (his business at the time--I bagged bulk Indian groceries in exchange for yoga classes;it was a nexus of the Indian community in Dallas at the time)! Kumar LOVES being the center of attention, and I'm delighted that he's now an international movie star! Congratulations on your success. I'm so glad the Wilson brothers and Wes Anderson made such good use of such an unusual character. Comment on this... |
