Gary Stevens

Hall of Fame Jockey Gary Stevens has won more than 4,700 races in his career. He has had the distinction of his mounts earning more than $200 million, with eight victories in Triple Crown races, including three Kentucky Derby titles. He has won eight Breeders' Cup races with a combined $13 million purse, making it the single richest day in horse racing. He has raced in every racetrack in North America, as well as overseas in Hong Kong, Tokyo, Dubai, Ireland and France.

Born on an Idaho farm, Stevens was always a lover of horses. His father trained horses, first as a hobby and then as a profession. At six, a degenerative hip ailment forced his leg into a brace. Although doctors predicted he would wear the brace for years, he was able to walk without it a mere eighteen months later. The determination and will power that have carried Stevens through many hardships and injuries throughout his career was present even at that early age.

Gary followed in his brother Scott's footsteps, riding his first race at fourteen. At sixteen, he left home to pursue racing professionally. Stevens briefly retired in 1999, but not being able to stay away from the sport he loves, he returned eleven months later to once again compete at the top of his game.

Stevens recently released his autobiography entitled The Perfect Ride for Kensington Publishing. The book chronicles the extreme highs and devastating lows of his life, which have taken him around the world on the backs of some of the most famous horses in racing history.

Stevens has four children and makes his home in Southern California in the hills overlooking the Santa Anita racetrack. When not racing, you can find him on the golf course.

Seabiscuit serves as Stevens' acting debut.
