Jerry Stahl/Perm. Midnight (Mon Oct 2, 2006 9:23pm ET)report post

Just finished the book and a bit let down at the end. I am raising a 16 year old niece who lost both parents to heroin use. My husband and I raised her from 8 years of age to present. We aggressively sought custody.

However, it was interesting to read the addicts' side of things. I can tell you this I have never met a heroin addict that has completely gotten off the drug unless they are on methadone! Would love to know how Jerry supposedly "kicked" the habit????

Addiction is a very tricky disease of the body & soul and can change your brain chemistry. in order to have a fighting chance, it helps to keep busy doing something that makes you happy and builds your self esteem,(Since Jerry has become successful on his own terms ,he has something to wake up for). To have and feel love and support in your life with a purpose also helps. Some people go the spiritual road and whatever works is the way to go.
I knew JS a long time ago and he was and I'm sure still is a very special & intelligent man and I miss him..

you should actually read the book. The basic premise is the same, but it definately has a lot more detail. He has other books too; Perv-A Love Story and Plainclothes Naked. Both are great reads. I just finished Naked last night, Stahl, comes up with the best stuff. All the elements of a great book are there.

What's funniest is that I've probably been reading and watching Stahl's work since I was about 7 or 8 and just didn't know it. My mom wasn't home when I came home from school, so I would get bored and read my mom's Husler X-Rated letters. I wasn' t such a well behaved girl. Of course when the grown ups are around I'd play nice. Alf was a fave of mine and Moonlighting was my Grandmother's show( we used to watch together). I did watch Twin Peaks a little, and caught Northern Exposure with my bestfriend Angie, who at the time was 26 and I was preteen (I always like being around people much older then myself). Now at 25 and after I've read all the books I'm an even bigger fan of his work. The only pieces I couldn't watch were the Bad Boy's movies, but hey I know even Stahl must have bills to pay.

I have way too much time on my hands today. In short if you like your books to have comedy with a little dark perversion This is the author for you

I just finished watching the movie and want to thank Jerry Stahl for the strong impression he left on me. Immediately following the movie I had to get on the internet and learn more about this person. The movie made me feel sick to see that someone could reach such depths, yet by the end of the movie the sick feeling was replaced with hope. I so desparately wanted to know that Jerry Stahl made it till today without the addiction. The fact that the movie brought out all these emotions in me, tells me what a great movie this is and what a courageous person Mr. Stahl is.
