awful actress (Tue Jun 16, 2009 3:00pm ET)report post
by puja
I'm not at all impressed with this "actress." She basically plays the same role over and over again - conflicted Indian girl 'rebelling' against her culture in order to find happiness. Her role in BILB, Second Generation, and now Compulsion are proof of that. ER even had that same storyline - gave up medicine briefly to work at a conveinence store. She's a complete hypocrite too - claims she wants to be seen as an actress without the "ethnic tag" attached to her, then does stupid stereotypical roles that prove the contrary. She doesn't want to be "defined" by her heritage but has no problem using it to get roles. Her filmography - if you can call it that - from the UK is a complete joke and her work here in the US isn't anything to brag about either. When she does something of substance, then maybe I'll start to respect her. But playing the same one-dimensional role over again i.e. Jennifer Aniston's 'Rachel Green' doesn't make you a good actress!

parminder's nude scene (Thu Apr 30, 2009 2:33am ET)report post
by miya
I just read that Parminder Nagra will be doing a nude scene in Compulsion with Ray Winstone. This is her first nude scene in her career and she's "fit, healthy, and comfortable" in her body to do it. Compulsion is also about a woman trying to escape an arranged marriage...typical of Parminder to go back to this type of lame overly done before storyline. I was hoping for something better than that after the success of BILB and a 6 year stint on ER.

another trashy role for parminder (Wed Jan 16, 2008 11:03am ET)report post
by lila
Supposedly Parminder will be "starring' in an ITV drama The Changeling. She plays a woman who doesn't want her marriaged arranged by her father, so she sleeps with one of his employees who offers to help her out but she doesn't trust.

This is another stupid stereotypical role, and it's not at all surprising that Parminder chose to do it. If you look at her filmography, it consists of nothing but stupid roles that perpetuate stereotypes, especially her UK work i.e. Second Generation, BILB.

I thought she was doing a pretty good job on ER, then she goes and does this. I don't know why she's going back to the UK as she has no fan base there, most people can't stand seeing her on TV.

everyone's a critic -- yough crowd (Mon Jul 17, 2006 4:54am ET)report post
by not important
hollywood does not ask an actor or an actress "what part do you think you would like to play?"-- the writer's write, the directors direct, the producer's produce and so forth. wheather you like parminder nagra or not, she has a job to do -- and if that is kissing a white guy, going against her parents for happiness, or a love scene with an african american; you must understand that the role was written that way for her to portray. i believe that an indian female, that just so happens to be married to an asian male, wrote and directed bend it like beckham -- not parminder. you cannot see what the director see's until their vision is put on the big screen. also the film may be more personal -- replace soccer(football) with filmmakking -- replace the white boy with an asian male -- maybe the director really wanted more out of life than a traditional marrage -- and maybe parminder brought that out on screen better than the most beautiful and most perfect bollywood actress. (being an american, and a student of acting and filmmaking i hate the term bollywood for too many reasons to list but i will give you one -- it belittles the race of indian people -- and i am not an indian.) taking on roles are not political stances. her job is to merely entertain you. you like what you like and do not like what you do not like so i will not try to change your opinion but i will tell you this -- she must perform for you all...to make her rent. the path she chose is on her but i am a true fan of hers, of what she does, and would stand in her corner as support for the critics she must face. as for her not choosing more traditional indian female roles -- american men have a fetish for indian women(including myself)but what american men do not realize is that it does not happen the way it did in bend it like beckham. i know this and respect this. i really respect this. in hollywood you must work your way up to the top...from the bottom. parminder nagra is on her way up. did you all know that she wrote a screenplay called "love in little india". all nay sayers should be the first in line to see what vision she wants to share with you on the big screen. 20-20 vision and no -- parminder nagra is not hot...she is beautiful.

I completely agree with the sentiments expressed in this post. Parminder is not only a beautiful woman, but also an excellent actress. I also do not understand the claims, repeated all up and down this forum, that she only plays stereotypical roles. This sentiment is misguided on so many levels that it seems her critics are actually either not really familiar with her work, and/or do not understand exactly how or why a stereotype offends them. The term stereotype, when viewed in the context of entertainment, is simply the unfair application of certain attributes of some members within a particular group to all its members all the time. As such, a stereotype can be positive, negative, or neutral depending on how it is perceived by the target group. Most reasonable people will take issue with negative stereotypes, and rightly so. Since we are all individuals, most stereotypes will invariably be inaccurate and serve as inadequate representations of a group. This fact, however, does not negate the possibility that any one particular individual of a group may actually possess any of the attributes the stereotype ascribes to. Despite what we may feel about the tendency of Hollywood, or filmmakers in general, to embrace certain stereotypes, one cannot place the blame for this trend on the actors or actresses that play the roles offered. As a professional actor, their job is to make the character as believable as possible. Being able to convert what would otherwise be a stereotypical role into a three dimensional and sympathetic character is what demonstrates an actor’s skill. In that regard, Parminder is a really good actress. One may not care for the character she plays, but this does not serve as a legitimate criticism of her acting.

As for all her roles actually being stereotypical, I just don’t see any convincing evidence. With regards to “Bend It”, the previous post makes an accurate argument in defense of that role. The bulk of her other work prior to “Bend It” was on stage doing primarily Indian themed plays written and directed by other Indians. In one instance she even played Snow White, which is hardly a stereotypical Indian role. Other work included stints on British TV doing sketch comedy and guest spots on serial shows. Of the two projects she did for Channel 4 after “Bend It”, one was an adaptation of Shakespeare’s, “Twelfth Night” wherein nothing can be construed as employing Indian stereotypes, and the other was “Second Generation.” I suspect the latter may serve as the inspiration for most of the angry criticisms since her character can be deemed to deviate dramatically from what would be considered acceptable behavior by members of her ethnic background. Nevertheless, it is still just a role. A character in a movie she did not write and whom no one ever said was intended to be representative of a typical Anglo-Indian female. There’s really no point in discussing her acting in “Ella Enchanted” since she does so little of it there. Her work on ER is splendid. Once again she gets criticized for some of her character’s actions instead of her ability to play the character realistically. Some of the criticisms even seem to express thinly veiled racist attitudes that have nothing to do with her acting ability. How her role, as a Yale trained, British born doctor who happens to have a Sikh background, can be considered stereotypical is really unclear. Are non-Sikhs being unfairly led into believing that British born Sikh girls are all doctors who yearn for the things that her character apparently yearns for? How can anyone construe this character as being stereotypically negative or offensive?

It appears that most of the criticism’s leveled against her in this forum seem to be a reflection of people’s ill-formed opinions of her as a person and not genuine criticisms of her acting ability. Since no one here actually knows her, these personal attacks seem quite unfair and unwarranted. Judging by some of the arguments used, they are also completely illogical as well. Trying to characterize her as a person based on the roles or characters she has played, regardless of how stereotypical they may or may not seem to the critic, is simply nonsensical. As already stated, she is an individual entertainer and is not seeking to be representative of any particular group, including that of her own ethnic background. Such a statement does not imply that she has a problem with, or is trying to deny, her heritage. I've never read anything where she expresses any negative sentiment towards her background. Why this stance should annoy other members of her racial, religious, or ethnic heritage to the point where they express such obviously venomous criticism is unfathomable. Particularly since she is making it clear that nothing she does as an actress is intended to be representative of them as a group. Simply sharing the same ethnic background as the actress does not equip anyone with some legitimate authority to sit in judgment of how she goes about pursuing her career or living her personal life. It seems as though people are just looking for an excuse to tear her down for having the audacity to be successful in an industry we can all agree is predominantly run by white/western ideals. As long as she is happy being able to do exactly what she has always dreamed of doing, I don’t see the point of making personally disparaging remarks about her. We should all be so lucky.
