Biography #2

For more than a decade, Holly Robinson Peete has been a fixture on television, through high-profile roles that cross over between comedy and drama.

In childhood, Peete was exposed to the entertainment business through her father, Matthew, who produced and starred as Gordon in the original Sesame Street and later worked on The Cosby Show as a producer for seven years. Her mother, Dolores, achieved success as a personal manager, guiding the careers of many prominent actors, writers and directors, including Holly.

Holly was born in Philadelphia and then moved to Los Angeles at the age of 10. After graduating from high school in Los Angeles, she entered the prestigious Sarah Lawrence College in New York, majoring in psychology and French. While studying abroad her junior year at France's renowned Sorbonne University, she sang in Paris nightclubs, including a performance with Lionel Hampton at the Hotel Meridien Jazz Club.

Three months after graduation in 1986, she won a starring role on the hit series 21 Jump Street as Officer Judy Hoffs - and an opportunity to exercise her vocal talents by singing the show's theme song. Subsequently, she starred opposite Mark Curry in the hit television comedy series Hangin' with Mr. Cooper, and combined her singing voice with acting ability portraying Diana Ross in the miniseries The Jacksons: An American Dream. She also starred in the cable television movie Killers in the House and the original BET movie After All.

Married to Oakland Raider quarterback Rodney Peete, Holly enjoys her real-life role as a mother. With twins Rodney Jackson and Ryan Elizabeth, leisure time is rare for Peete, who enjoys yoga, kickboxing aerobics, hiking, traveling, and of course, watching football. The Peetes have also formed a foundation, HollyRod, to raise money for underprivileged people with Parkinson's disease, from which Holly's father suffers. The Reverend Jesse Jackson recently honored her with the 1999 Women of Conscience Award for her philanthropic efforts.
