Suggestion for a new movie (Sat Sep 16, 2006 7:27pm ET)report post
by Jay
Hi there. I have watched all films by Gurinder Chada and think they are fantastic (my fav being Bride and Prejudice!). I hear that the film Dallas is being worked on and I know this is going to be just as fab (both me and my husband are big fans of the TV series!!!!).

I note that the big theme in Gurinder Chada's movies seems to be inter-racial issues and, up until now, the films have focused on forming inter-racial relationships. I myself am married to an English guy and, as a suggestion, I think it would be fantastic if Gurinderji made a film about inter-racial marriages, maybe placing more emphasis on the trials and tribulations of such marriages! I must say, my husband is wonderful. He is very Indian (sometimes more than me!) and has settled into the Indian way of life with ease! It would be good to move away from fairytale stories and maybe start to deal with real issues and what's really going on in the world today! As you all know, inter-racial marriages have become extremely common in both UK and USA and every generation has it's own feelings about such marriages! I think, generally, people's thinking is becoming more liberal, although maybe the older generations are still stuck in the old ways thinking that Indian is best! I think it is extremely important to emphasis and highlight the point that no nationality, religion etc is completely good or bad. We need to begin to highlight that every religon has it's good points and bad points and that, just because you are indian does not mean that you are better than other races!

With the right mix of actors and actresses, I think a movie dealing with such issues has the real potential of becoming a big hit with all!

Regards

J

This is very true if Gurinder jee can make any such movie on the theam as suggested by you. She is the one who has the potential to understand the exact roots of human feelings, I am sure the talent of Gurinder Mam would be on the silver screen with such a theam because:-

wo jaantil hai dard ko pehchaan-naa
wo pehchaanti hain dard ki bivaaiyaan
wo samabhaalit kyaalon ki purbaaiyaan
bahut khoob hai oonkaa adaazy bayaan.

regards to both of you

Being I am a hindi poetess thus have my own style to express the same in this poetical style.

Hi there,

Does anyone have a contact address for Ms chadha as i would like to send a letter or praise on to her, and send her a short novel- based on a true story from which i believe she may gain some inspiration. I understand she was brought up in England, and as an anglo-asian im sure she has experienced many hardships in errasing racial barriers, however i think it may be of benefit to hear the story of a young anglo-asian trying to lift the current racial barriers now.
Im sure shes over-whelmed with fan mail...but its a worth a try right? xxx

my problem with Gurinder Chadha's films, are she seems to be trying to break racial barriers, but always restricts herself to indian women desiring the english man...all i know is that the english man caused alot of problems in india...so what is so special about the english man? The other thing about english men is that they have none or very little culture...so why isnt she more imaginitive and mix the indian culture with west indian or chinese or jewish, where there is culture?..something different than what she is producing...where i come from i see many relationships between blacks and asians..but Gurinder Chadha doesnt seem to want to address these issues

I must say that I for one take real issue with the comments posted in this message! May I say that I am married to an English man and, despite what your feelings may be about English men, my husband has ALOT of culture and is very decent! Yes, the English may have caused a lot of problems in India but we as Indians are no better for letting these problems continue! The problems in India are not just down to the English but are down to us too! We let them "ruin" our country and used their actions as an excuse to carry on acting inappropriately!

India has come along way since the days the English ruled it but the downfalls of it today are solely down to us, eg corruption! It's always easier to blame other people and religons for our downfalls!

May I also say that, being in the legal profession, I have met a lot of Indian men without any culture and quite frankly, some of them are a lot worse than the "Englishmen" you seem to have such an issue with!

The only slight point I would agree with in your posting is that the films always seem to be about Indian girls falling for English men. Maybe for a change, it would be nice to see an English girl falling for an Indian man!

TO: mr jimmy.
I know where you are comming from. I am American originally from Trinidad in the west indies, and I also lived in Jamaica.

You still carry the baggage of colonialisim (read Sir Vidya Naipaul) and your hatred for white people is transparent.

If gurinder were to follow any part of your suggestions her reputation would be in the toilet and her career would be over.

I lescaped that fetid, torpid, septic tank. called the west indies. This is a place not a nationality or ethnic group.

First of all, there are no Indians there, just people that look like Indians. I also realize that the rape of the Indian woman continue to be a fantasy of black men from that part of the world.

The fact that Indian women in the west indies give themselves willingly to black men is not an appropriate material for the the uplifting genere of Gurinder's films.

The ethnic indians there have been represesed and de- culturalised. They have even lost their language.

There is nothing that anyone from that part of the world can contribute to Gurinder's movies.

Dear Madame

I am a student studying my A levels in media. In my assignment I have chosen to study the field of women and bollywood films. I would feel very obliged if you could please answer a few of my questions, to help me come to a conclusion on how women directors get treated in the film industry, and also please do not feel hesitated to tell me about anything else that you may believe is relevant.

1) How have you found working in the film industry? Have you ever received any sexist comments made from the media or other places?
2) Has anyone ever said to you that you are making a feminist film?
3) As you are a female director, what do you think of other female directors, are they do you think finding it hard to cope?

Thank you very much
With kind regards Simin Daula

Feminist defined (Sat Aug 12, 2006 8:01pm ET)report post
by Hersh
HI,
I am an english literature Masters student. You need to understand a few basic ideas: Sexualit and gender are treated differently in literature/english. Although in normal world it means the same, but if you are doing it academically you gotta define the terms for your understanding.
Gender is about expression of feminine or maculine qualities, and it can be expressed by a male or a female or both by same sex. For example, DH Lawrence's work is about feminism by through a male perspective( people call him gay) so is Alexander Pope.
While sexuality is more a common male/female dichotomy.

Do mail me if you think you wanna know more!
