Takao Okawara
Takao Okawara has proven himself to be Toho's top fantasy film director and a worthy successor to Ishiro Honda, director of the first Godzilla and many other giant monster, fantasy and science-fiction films for Toho from the early 1950s through the '70s. Born on December 20, 1949 in Tokyo, Okawara joined Toho in 1973. He was an assistant director on Akira Kurosawa's epic Kagemusha: The Shadow Warrior and Shiro Moritani's visual effects spectacular Submersion of Japan.
Okawara made his feature directing debut in 1991 on Reiko The Psyche Resurrected. He directed Godzilla And Mothra: The Battle for Earth in 1992 and Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla II in 1993. This was followed a year later by Orachi The Eight-Headed Dragon, a fanciful special effects spectacular which explored Japan's mythical roots. Okawara also directed 1997's Abduction.
