Zerbe as Coriolanus (Thu Nov 13, 2008 11:27pm ET)report post

This will seem strange.

I just want to say to someone, somewhere, how much Anthony Zerbe meant to me when I was a boy.

In the 60's I came across him in the role of Coriolanus at San Diego's Old Globe Theatre.
It was the first of Shakespeare's play I'd seen performed, so my memories are writ large.

From Mr. Zerbe's first line (a drawled, contemptuous "Thanks"), I was under a spell from which I've probably never been fully resuscitated.

Gawd, what a performance the man gave! I went back several times, though it was a long train ride each time from Del Mar, where I lived, and the tickets, for a teenager, cost me a lot of window-washing.

I've often wanted want to thank Mr. Zerbe. I can still see the dust rising on the stage as he strode into that crowd of unhappy Romans. He made me a play-goer, but I never again quite saw the like of what he did that summer in San Diego.

A belated bravo.

I was Googling to find info on the actress who played Zerbe's mother in Coriolanus (Patricia Brooks?), when I came upon your post. I totally agree!

I think I was home for the summer from college and, on a whim, dropped in to the Old Globe for a matinee of Coriolanus and Anthony Zerbe strode out onstage looking like Paul McCartney. His performance was stunning and I became a lifelong fan.

Looks like he had the same effect on both of us.

Sorry for the delayed response. If you are still out there...

I'm very glad to hear from another fan of Zerbe's Coriolanus. Yes, he did look a lot like Paul McCartney.

Volumnia (Coriolanus's mother) was played by Jacqueline Brooks. The year was 1965. Menenius Agrippa was played, also very memorably, by Michael O'Sullivan.

Incidentally, you might enjoy a cast photo of these three (Brooks, Zerbe, O'sullivan) at
