eyes wide open? (Sun May 31, 2009 11:54am ET)report post
by scott
Just saw eyes wide shut...for the first time..had heard not the best things about it...Didn't want to be disappointed...fav film is Stranglove,,, huge fan of Kubrick

To me the film is about the internet. The staging of the initial time when he enters the mansion and there is the main person (the hub) and the people all around him in a circle..To me he is talking about the internet... the incredible addiction of that the internet allows and enables.

It hit me right away..Th castle was a metaphor for this construction that we have made.... the mansion of porn, of sex and useage of human flesh.

The masks represent the fact that through the net we can be faceless and go anywhere and not pay the price.

Stanley Kubrick; An Auteur (Thu Oct 9, 2008 2:27pm ET)report post
by chelsee
hi, i am an A2 student and for my film (small scale research project) coursework i have decided to base it on Stanley Kubrick himself, an auteur of...
i will pay particular focus to his recognisable style (his distinctive themes) paying particular attention to the theme of 'dehuminization'
my chosen three focus films are:
A Clockwork Orange (1971)
The Shining (1980) and
Full Metal Jacket (1987)

it would be really helpful and much appreciated if you took the time to read this and gave me your opinions, this would help with my primary research! :]

1/would you have used the term 'auteur' when describing Kubrick (noting that the French term symbolises the director as the creator of the film-in other words cinematic effort is a solo contribution, not a collaborative one) and how have you recognised Kubrick's influence in the themes of his films?

2/what other key themes have you noted in Kubrick's work (particulary the three films given)?

3/after your viewing of these three films, what were your views on the films portrayal of the key films (in particular-dehuminization)?

4/do you think Kubrick's work (in particular the three films i've noted) reflect the fears in society (at the time of production) about the future?

5/do you think Kubrick's work could denote ideologies of society at the time? and do you think it could have influenced society?
thank you for taking your time to read (and hopefully respond to) this, all feedback welcome Smile

Dr. Strangelove (Wed Mar 8, 2006 10:12pm ET)report post
by Alex Fischetti
Kubrick's greatest work in my opinion was Dr. Strangelove. I never thought that Kubrick was great at comedy until I saw that flick. I thought that was one of the greatest films ever made. Way to go Kubrick!

Kubricks favorite work (Sun Feb 23, 2003 6:30pm ET)report post
by mike
I read a quote of kubricks that his favorite movie he had done was a clockwork orange, I don't think it was Eyes Wide Shut. Maybe I'm wrong, but it was a direct quote.
