He also received numerous accolades for his portrayal of New Republic editor Charles Lane in Billy Ray's Shattered Glass, garnering Golden Globe and Spirit Award nominations for Best Supporting Actor, as well as awards from the Boston, San Francisco, St. Louis, Toronto and National Society of Film Critics.

Sarsgaard first received wide acclaim for his role as John Lotter, the tormenter and rapist in Kimberly Peirce's Boys Don't Cry, opposite Hilary Swank and Chloe Sevigny. Reilly and Molly Shannon; Jarhead, directed by Sam Mendes, starring Jake Gyllenhaal and Jamie Foxx; Flightplan, opposite Jodie Foster; The Dying Gaul, with Patricia Clarkson and Campbell Scott; Garden State, starring Zach Braff and Natalie Portman; K-19 The Widowmaker, starring Harrison Ford and Liam Neeson; and the thriller The Skeleton Key, with Kate Hudson and Gena Rowlands.
