| by M Heathcote, England. One of the great, great stylists, the man was like a permanently lit fuse. You often felt there was going to be an explosion of pent up emotion coming soon from his characters, and there usually was. More openly passionate in his style than Brando, though similar in both techniche and ability, both played the troubled man with a conscience and perhaps a dark secret or two to near perfection. Both smouldered like few actors before or since, and I find it difficult to talk of one without the other. And yet there seems to be a gulf in their reputations, albeit from the public's percpective. I am pretty certain the movie-set of his era and possibly now, truly values the enormous contribution Steiger made to quality film entertainment. He gave his characters a searing forthrightness, and was more comfortable with a verbally demanding script than Brando was. Infact, it's quite obvious looking at his catalogue that directors were soon aknowledging his gift for rhythmic and powerful soliloquies - a rare gift still, among actors his side of the Atlantic, with respect. All that Steiger lacked of Brando's armoury was those stunning looks. Watch most films he starred or co-starred in and it's hard to say he didn't shine out above all but the Brandos. Such intensity. What an actor! Comment on this... |
