Tom Noonan is an exceptional artist. Even while playing a ruthless serial killer he can simultaneously reveal the vulnerable wounded child in all of us, and therefore evoke sympathy for his character.
His own film What Happened Was... portrays two loners who are looking for companioship and love. These two fragile and defensive people learn more about each other during one dinner date than most people learn in years.
The situations, dialougue, and psychological depth of the writing is almost Kafkaesque, and Tom as an actor once again bears his character's innermost soul with the most remarkable honestly and sublety.
My only regret is that his own films are not avaible on DVD, at least not that I know of. But his films should be required viewing in every film school, and available for anyone interested in writing, acting, or directing.
In fact anyone looking for a hauntingly unique vision of the world and the plight of the human spirit should make themselves very aware of Tom Noonan and his work.
Like anything of great value his work is sometimes hard to find, but you'll agree that the reward is worth a long and difficult search.

I totally agree with you...Tom Noonan is very special as a writer and as an actor. "The Wife" has just come out on DVD (May 2006), and I will be watching it for the 4th time tonight. It is so rich in psychology, observation, subtleties of every kind, plus the cinematography is amazing. That film is such a jewel. I felt deeply touched the first time, and I keep coming back to discover more. "What happened was..." (still only on VHS) is excellent as well. You just feel for these lonely people, as dysfunctional as most of their behaviour is...it is so easy to hurt someone and you don't even notice it. Those well-observed cruelties that we have all suffered from. "I am just kidding, honey..." what a classic. You just identify with them, well, I do. Hope the DVD will help to make him better known to wider audiences. My favorite film of all time is "My dinner with Andre" by Louis Malle, so Tom Noonan is the closest you can get to that genre: real-time conversation on screen.
Greetings! Dorothea
