He has been working ever since, appearing in such films as Escape from Alcatraz, To Sleep with Anger, and Men of Honor. On television, Lumbly starred in Cagney & Lacey and has guest-starred on The X-Files and The West Wing.

His numerous television work includes Buffalo Soldiers, for which he earned a NAACP Image Award nomination for Outstanding Lead Actor. Lumbly received Ace Award nominations for his work in Nightjohn and On Promised Land. Lumbly is married and has one son.
