Roos began his career as a television writer. His first produced screenplay, Love Field, was directed by Jonathan Kaplan and earned its star, Michelle Pfeiffer, an Academy Award nomination for her role of a Dallas housewife determined to attend the funeral of John F. Kennedy. Next, Roos adapted a contemporary thriller novel by John Lutz for Single White Female directed by Barbet Schroeder and staffing Bridget Fonda and Jennifer Jason Leigh. It quickly became one of the hit psychological thrillers of the decade.
His gift for attracting A-list talent to his projects continued when his script Boys on the Side drew stars Whoopi Goldberg, Mary-Louise Parker and Drew Barrymore and director Herbert Ross to what became a critically acclaimed film. Then, in 1996, he wrote the remake of the French classic Diabolique which attracted a cast that included Sharon Stone, Isabelle Adjani, Kathy Bates and Chazz Palminteri.
