| by Carson But why burn the bridge? If he is really that much into money, why not survive on his $300,000+ monthly salary until something better comes along? Don't walk out unless you have something better to walk out to. I think he is just blinded by the color green and it makes me sick.

| by Emily Yeah, I don't disagree that he should be happy with a salary that so far exceeds most people's. Especially since he gets that money for doing something that so many people do for fun! Something that he appears to enjoy doing too! I mean, most of us slave at crap jobs we hate and get less in a year than he gets for an episode.
BUT I was just saying I can see why he feels it's a slap in the face to get so much less than Ray. And he probably isn't necessarily going to totally quit, unless he is forced to, he may be trying to see whether they can keep the show going without him. And that was my point, the show would be a huge mess without him on it -- in my opinion...

| by Carson You make some good points Emily. And apparently the standoff worked. Brad is going to make $250,000 /episode from now on AND getting a payment to match that $250,000 / episode for his work he did in 2002-2003. I wish I could get paid for something I did last year. He and the other the other three costars also got a stake in the show valued around 5 mil. Not only that but ALL the cast members are going to get "backend profits" from the show when the program goes into rerun land that could total 500 million in just five years. These folks are set for life. Excuse me while I sigh..

That's pretty cool! I know it is easy to feel frustrated about the absurdity of salaries for what the work is, it is something I have always been amazed about. Like, teachers make a pittance while athletes make millions. And so many other examples. If you got paid more for the horrors or just lameness of your job it would sure be the opposite of the whole Brad Garrett versus you and I in terms of salary!!!
But, as I get older I see that it is all a facade anyway and so the money is just another part of the craziness of our society's priorities. So why WOULDN'T people who are merely portraying the "real" things people are actually doing, be getting paid a lot to do it? It IS an illusion and so they go hand in hand.
And plus probably actors sit around and talk about certain producers or directors or stuff that are difficult to work with, just like any job it gets hard because of the fact there are so many people involved. People are a mess, but you have to love them.
Thanks for this dialogue, it's been fun! I've included my e-mail in case you'd like to strike up more conversations...

| by Carson Again, good points. Take for example JK Rowling. The richest woman in England thanks to Harry Potter. What was she quoted as saying? "I want my old life back". She was tired of the constant interviews, tired of not being able to get out of her mansion without being mugged by fans or worse, and tired of the publicity. A woman with millions in her name quotes something like that? A trip to Costa Rica in '98 put my priorities in place. People with near nothing living lives in sheer bliss. No worries about their belongings because they didn't have much!
Brad might be in high heaven due to his new raise, but he may realize soon enough that his money will cause more problems than he realizes. Does this friend like me for me or my money? Does my WIFE love me for me or my money? I may not make much, but I know that whenever I find someone, I'll know for sure she loves me for who I am.

| by Emily Hi again!
I agree with you on that, about the difference betweeen people's lives across the world. My Mother went on a missionary trip to Monterey Mexico in 1999, and just the pictures and stories she told me were so amazing. ESPECIALLY because they all wanted to give THEM stuff, to thank them all for coming and helping them! It was so incredible, the woven things the ladies brought to my Mom, very touching when you saw how they lived. But on the faces of the children is pretty much a bliss, not a sadness like you'd imagine.
For a while I thought, "why don't they just leave that place?" But then you have to realize, they have not been raised like we have, to believe in the ability of a person to pull up roots and make a new life for themselves. They have not seen that happen, they have no reference point for it to get their heads around, so they continue on where they are, graciously undesiring of that "something more" we Americans are all blessed/cursed with!!!
That's where dissatisfaction with a large salary can come in for someone in a business as far-removed from that life as is possible. Things get out of perspective, and at that point it's almost like the same phenomenon on a different scale, where the person cannot see any life outside the lavish one they're in, and it takes more and more to satisfy (read: cannot possibly satisfy because there will always be someone out there with more!!!) So hopefully, some of these new earnings will be going to charities, hopefully that was also a factor in his push for more, a desire to add more to the world around him....
And as to you, my friend, based on this discussion, you would not accept less than someone who loved you for who you are! That's an admirable quality!
