| by chris howard I miss the guy. What is there to compare him to in these days? Any director that says he's influenced by Peckinpah, in my view, means he's ripping off Peckinpah wholesale. Show me a director with a fresh approach, a new take and, hey, I'll buy a ticket. Not to say that Peckinpah himself was not influenced by other directors works, nor was he above a little pilfering from those works. He admits borrowing freely from Treasure of The Sierra Madre when making The Wild Bunch. Freddie Sykes was spawned from Walter Hustons character Howard, and Lt Hererra was a lift from Gold Hat himself, Alfonso- "We don't need no steenkin' badges..." Bedoya. His forte came from making his characters real, believable. Human and full of pain. Guilt. Self loathing. Sadness. Not many actors portray such feelings in todays movies. Just killing, fast driving, explosions. Too bad he never realized his own greatness nor his capacity for self destruction. I think he was in denial about both of these forces within himself.
