General, a Soldier, and a Gentleman (Sat May 1, 2004 2:24pm ET)report post

Loved Lang in Gettysburg. In Gods and Generals, Lang set a new standard, capturing the complexities of Stonewall Jackson in a way that few actors can. Most recently, I saw Lang in a one-man performance of Beyond Glory, which he wrote, based on a book of the same name. On the stage, Lang portrays seven winners of the medal of honor, recalling their stories and articulating their views on their actions, wars, comrades, etc. He was magnificent, topping even his portrayal of Jackson. After the show, he stopped to chat with a few stragglers/fans and was most gracious. One couldn't help but wish that actors and respectful fans could interact more often. I will look forward to Lang's future efforts.

I'm so glad you saw and liked "Beyond Glory"! I was the production photographer for that show and got 4 different shots printed in the Washington Post last year (among many other print and online publications). The Post's theatre critic named "Beyond Glory" his second favorite show of 2004 in the D.C. area (after the Kennedy Center's "Glass Menagerie" with Sally Field), and Steve received a Helen Hayes Awards nomination for lead actor in a resident play. The winners will be announced in May.

Steve will be doing 3 of the characters from BG for the Navy League convention March 23 in DC, and he'll be performing the entire "Beyond Glory" at the Goodman Theatre in Chicago in the fall. I think he'll also be touring in BG at USA military bases and installations around the world over the years to come!

I recommend that anyone who can please see this show. Each of the characters is truly represented from their stories in the book. I've had other MOH recipients who've seen the show and know the men portrayed tell me that Steve nailed the nature and character of each of them.

I only recently had the privilege of seeing Gods and Generals, and I was so glad I did! Stephen Lang's performance as Stonewall Jackson was first rate! I wept right along with him when he wept for little Jane. Would that I could personally thank him for this role that touched me so.

Ooops. Forgot to mention that I met Stephen Lang at a Civil War seminar in April 2003. I'm related to Stonewall Jackson and I thanked Steve for his wonderful portrayal of "cousin Thomas." Through Steve I met his sister Jane who produced "Beyond Glory" in Arlington, VA, last year. And I was fortunate to be the production photographer for the show. Steve truly loved playing Jackson and greatly admires him. The Jackson Brigade geneological society (all those descended from John Jackson and Elizabeth Cummins--Stonewall's great grandparents) honored Steve with a certificte of appreciation for both his portrayal of Jackson in "Gods and Generals" and for his talks that he's given at several Civial War seminars on his experience portraying Jackson.

I thought that Mr. Lang truly "channeled" T.J. Jackson. What a challenge for an actor to convey the humanity of such a heroic icon. He certainly did his homework and it showed.
P.S. If you want a treat, try some of Mr. Lang's readings of audiobooks. In addition to the Shaara books, I've especially enjoyed his doing some of the Matt Scudder (NYC alcoholic detective) mysteries by Lawrence Block. He certainly seems to enjoy playing all of the characters, and he does it so well. Smile

Lang in Gods & Generals was incredible. It was as if Stonewall Jackson appeared in person. I was moved and intoxicated by this movie. I was on the edge of my seat the entire film and wept, and wept. I am so thankful to Lang for working so hard and performing so brilliantly. Everyone, from North to the South, should see this movie and Lang's amazing representation of Thomas "Stonewall" Jackson.
