| by Mike A very understated sort of actor-that was his brilliance-looked like an everyday sort of chap on screen, one with something to say, but who rarely got asked to say it. In other words an everyman, quietly spoken but with abundant heart and passion underneath. There are a lot of undercurrents in his acting, his warm eyes are always hiding a secret or two. He had a quietly bubbling intelligence that suggested so much more than we usually got to see. Because he was an animated sort of actor, his body forever on the move from the electricity of his inteligence, too often, his directors would use this gift as merely a cycle of quirkiness to offset the heavier, meatier performance of his leading player-This must have typecast him as a supporting actor-I can't remember Bates in a leading film role at all, except that late De Carrier role he played with aplomb, proving what a fine lead actor he was!(Even in 'The Go-Between', possibly his best film performance, he was playing second fiddle to Christie.) What a shame then he didn't get a real meaty lead role to take on in his prime! Having said that, he had good stage roles, especially in Pinter, the film work he did was memorable, and he was never out of work! He had something about him, that man, an unusual sort of undemanding yet unignorable presence. An actor full of subtleties. An unforgettable man! Comment on this... |

| by marcus I saw Alan Bates play plain clothes investigator in a tv production of a play set in England, in a normal housing estate where the people across the road were spies and and the shock of it all contributed to the death of the lady who lived in the house used for surveillance. Does any know the title? I think it was produced for tv late eighties. Thanks Marcus. Comment on this... | ||||

| by Donna What a class actor! Surely one of our Best!! He was so hypnotic in 'Far From the Madding Crowd' with Julie Christie. So handsome and sexy in his quiet, manly way. Comment on this... |
