Cleavant Derricks

Cleavant Derricks, an actor, singer, and composer began his career writing Southern Gospel music in Nashville. Along with his father, a Baptist minister and a gospel composer, Derricks wrote a gospel album, Satisfaction Guaranteed, which was nominated for a Grammy award. He moved to New York to study with Vinette Carrol at the Urban Arts Theatre where he received rave reviews in her Broadway shows, Your Arms Too Short To Box With God and But Never Jam Today. He then served as composer, musical director and featured actor for the musical, When Hell Freezes Over I'll Skate, which later aired as a PBS special.

Derricks then created the role of James Thunder Early for the Broadway production of Dreamgirls for which he received a Tony Award. Film roles soon followed with Paul Mazursky's MOSCOW ON THE HUDSON, with Robin Williams, Neil Simon's THE SLUGGER'S WIFE, Michael Dinner's OFF BEAT, and most recently, Wes Craven's CARNIVAL OF SOULS. Derrick's television credits are topped off with Sliders, Thea with pop sensation, Brandy, Fox's Drexell's Class, Good Sports and Woops. He has guest starred on Roseanne, A Different World, Touched by an Angel and Charmed. Derrick's new CD, Beginnings, continues to get global Top 40 attention.
