Taika Cohen

A successful stand-up comedian, actor and painter, Cohen made his feature film debut in Robert Sarkies' box office smash Scarfies as the ‘dark horse' Alex, for which he was nominated for Best Actor at the 2000 New Zealand Film Awards.

Graduating with a degree in Theatre and Film from Victoria University in 1996, Cohen first worked with Scarfies' co-writer Duncan Sarkies in the 1995 production Body Play. He has also received national and international acclaim for his part in the comedy duo Humour Beasts which he formed with fellow comedian Jermaine Clement. The duo performed to rave reviews at the Edinburgh Festival of the Arts, the Melbourne Comedy Festival and additional comedy festivals throughout New Zealand.

Cohen was recently based in Berlin concentrating on painting and in June 2000 had a highly successful exhibition of his work, Dirty Money in Wellington. His artistic skills were also utilised on SNAKESKIN, designing art for the dance room of the Mushroom Ball.
