Syed Alwi
After graduating from the University of Minnesota with a degree in journalism and theater arts, Alwi worked in the United States as a newsroom assistant for the Minneapolis Star and Tribune and also at an advertising agency. He then returned to Malaysia and was a broadcaster in English on Radio Malaysia and a producer, director and writer on the English language station RTM.
Alwi went on to continue his studies abroad at London Film School and again returned to his homeland of Malaysia to teach drama at the National Cultural Complex. He also lent his talents to such Malaysian companies as Perfima Film Production as an executive producer and writer, television TV3 as a producer, writer and production manager, and NTV7 as a manager in drama development.
A founding member of Malaysian Arts Theater Group and Kuala Lumpur Film Club, Alwi has written, directed or appeared in more than twenty plays as well as many Malaysian television series and dramas.
Alwi has garnered such awards as the National Literature Award in Drama, cultural Awards from Sweden, Yugoslavia, France and Australia, and the prestigious J.D. Rockefeller Fellowship. Most recently Alwi was bestowed with an honorary Datuk title.
