| by Tom Forehand, Jr. A big smile for Duvall as Lee in G & G.
Having studied the life and character (and some of the personal characteristics) of Robert E. Lee for the last five years....also, having
portrayed him as the older man (after the war) for two years myself....I'd like to give my evaluation of Robert D.'s portrayal of General Lee: It was excellent!
Every actor is restricted by the purpose of the scene and the written dialogue. Duvall did an excellent job in representing Lee in both. Any suggestions I would make for improvement on his part are absolutely minimal and are probably unnoticed by most viewers.
Duvall's accent was good as were his Lee mannerisms.
One scene for example: Lee and others are listening the performance of "Bonnie Blue Flag." Duvall, as Lee would, is
trying to maintain a dignified aire since he is in public. Yet, Duvall (as I am sure that Lee would) was ever so gently swaying with the music--and minimally (as I recall) tapping his feet to the music. This, in my opinion, is exactly how Lee (who loved music) would have acted in public. In private, Lee was a much more laid-back individual.
Congrats to Mr. D. for an excellent job.

| by ALex Johnson I was on the set of G&G and saw Robert Duvall in action. It was a great scene "Bonnie Blue Flag" -chapter 39 on the DVD. I'm on the screen standing behind Dr. Maguire.
