Re, the movie: Gone With the Wind.

It's taken me years to appreciate just to what degree Olivia De Havilland's Melanie had the inner grace and beauty that Vivien Leigh's Scarlett O'Hara lacked. While Scarlett had the edge insofar as she was superficially more attractive, Melanie's charm, vitality and sincerity shone like a beacon of light from within, and left Scarlett, quite frankly my dear, in the dust.

I think her finest performance was in "The Heiress" with Montgomery Clift. Spellbinding! Is it true that she was really in love with Errol Flynn, or was it the other way around?

Errol and Olivia... (Sat Oct 18, 2003 4:04am ET)report post

Errol Flynn was reportedly very much in love with Olivia de Havilland. She had a crush on him and has always had fond memories of their partnership on screen. But she was too sensible to believe that he would ever give up his playboy life style for marriage and successfully eluded his advances. According to Bette Davis, he "truly adored her."

She's my second favourite actress. She's not pretty especailly, but her face is nice, like Melanie's face in Gone with the WindSmile And she's very talented and intelligent woman.

She's not pretty? Are you kidding? She was one of the screen's great beauties as well as a fine actress. She's not supposed to be a beauty in GWTW as Melanie--plain and sweet--(or in THE HEIRESS) but in fact she was always considered one of the loveliest of all the Hollywood superstars. Errol Flynn really adored her and no wonder.
