Her role opposite Tommy Lee Jones in The Executioner's Song brought her great critical acclaim, as well as her subsequent performance in Martin Scorsese's After Hours. She reunited with Scorsese for his segment of New York Stories. She won a BAFTA Award for Best Supporting Actress for her work as Susan opposite newcomer Madonna in Desperately Seeking Susan.
Arquette's considerable acting talents have been showcased in such films as John Sayles' Baby It's You, Father and Sons, The Linguine Incident and Flight of the Intruder. Other films in which she has had featured parts include Silverado, S.O.B., Amazon Women On the Moon, Eight Million Ways to Die, More American Graffiti and Gorp, in which she made her film debut.
More recent credits include Do Me A Favor, an independent film directed by Sondra Locke; David Cronenberg's Crash; Quentin Tarantino's highly acclaimed Pulp Fiction; and Search and Destroy," a dark comedy executive produced by Martin Scorsese and directed by artist David Salle. She has also recently appeared in Floating Away for John Badham; Buffalo ‘66 for Vincent Gallo; Hope Floats, starring opposite Sandra Bullock for director Forest Whitaker; and Sugar Town for Allison Anders.
